American White Pelicans at Starved Rock Lock

 

I was in Northern Illinois in May.  On the 14th, I visited Starved Rock Lock and Dam located across the river from Starved Rock State Park. The most prevalent bird here was the American White Pelican!

The Sibley’s Guide to Birds indicates that American White Pelicans are occasionally in this neck of the woods (Illinois). The eBird checklist indicated American White Pelicans are rare in these parts.

In the water on both sides of the dam were many White Pelicans. In fact, I counted 140 of them.

According to the Starved Rock State Park website, the White Pelicans have been coming here for 10 years and some stay all year.  Read more about it:
